Pregnancy Test

The hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) Pregnancy Test determines whether you are pregnant by confirming the presence of hCG in your blood as early as 7 days after conception. This hormone is produced by the placenta (an organ that develops in the uterus during pregnancy) and increases steadily throughout the first trimester (8-10 weeks) of a normal pregnancy.

This test is qualitative and detects the presence or absence of hCG in your blood. Please note that this test is not quantitative and therefore does not measure the amount of hCG. The hCG test is highly accurate; if a positive result is found, you are very likely pregnant. However, the results should be confirmed with your healthcare provider. If the test result is negative, either you are not pregnant, or the test may have been conducted too early and requires repeating after a few more days. As with urine/home pregnancy tests, false results (both negative and positive) are possible outcomes from a blood pregnancy test. If you would like more information about your hCG levels, it is recommended that you follow up with your primary care provider or OBGYN.

What is tested?

The hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) Pregnancy Test can detect hCG in your blood as early as 7 days after conception. This test is a qualitative test and can only be used to confirm pregnancy. Your test results will be reported as positive or negative depending on the presence or absence of hCG.

The hCG Pregnancy Test is accurate, but as with urine/home pregnancy tests, false results (both negative and positive) are possible outcomes. A false-negative result indicates the test is negative, but you are pregnant. A common cause of a false-negative result is performing the test too early after conception, which results in not enough hCG in the blood to detect a pregnancy. If you suspect you are pregnant and have received a false-negative result, the test should be repeated in a few days. A false-positive result indicates the test is positive, but you are not pregnant. False positives rarely happen, but this may occur if you are taking medications containing hCG or due to certain medical conditions.

If you would like more information about your hCG levels, it is recommended that you follow up with your primary care provider or OBGYN.
